High Streets Are Losing Out On Disabled Shoppers

High Streets Are Losing Out On Disabled Shoppers

This month MDC Trailblazers published their latest report entitled, Short Changed, which reveals the findings of a recent investigation into access to high streets.

Accessing the high street is an integral part of modern life in the UK. High streets provide vital services for local communities and having the ability to access shops, cafés, banks or supermarkets, with family and friends, either for business or social engagements, are the pathways to a good standard of living.

Trailblazers have compiled a cost-effective guide for high street business with recommendations as to how businesses can improve disabled customers’ experiences in their establishments. Trailblazers have also shared their own experiences of accessing the high street with examples of good practice.

Some of the findings in the report include:

  • 75 per cent felt forced or limited to shop online owing to a lack of physical access in and around their town centre

  • two-thirds said that physical access regularly affects where they decide to go

  • 85 per cent see disabled toilets, changing rooms or lifts being misused as storage space
